Due to the high sensitivity and selective enhancement ability of SERS technology, it has broad application prospects in the detection of VOCs gases. However, there are still some issues that need to be addressed:
Cost issue. The high price limits the economic feasibility of large-scale application of SERS technology. In order to reduce costs and increase the variety of SERS active substrates, researchers have developed a series of non precious metal SERS substrates to reduce dependence on precious metals.

Signal stability. The stability of SERS signals needs further improvement, such as uniformity, repeatability, and sensitivity to environmental factors. New strategies and technologies should be developed, such as the Constrained Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (CERS) strategy and Single Atom Enhanced Raman Scattering (SAERS) effect, to improve signal stability and uniformity by preventing the aggregation of noble metal nanoparticles.

Selective adsorption. The selective enrichment and enhancement of specific VOCs in complex mixtures pose certain challenges. By designing MOFs with specific pore sizes, the selective enrichment ability of SERS technology for specific molecules in complex samples can be improved.

Complex data processing. In the complex system of actual detection, SERS spectral signals are relatively complex and require machine learning to quickly analyze SERS spectral data, reduce manual intervention, and improve analysis efficiency. This is particularly important for application scenarios that require rapid response, such as environmental monitoring and disease diagnosis. Overcoming these challenges will pave the way for SERS to detect and analyze volatile organic compounds in various environments, including environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics.
